Hps grow lights are used for indoor gardening, where additional and long hour light is needed. The most common uses are propagation and hydroponics growing. Hps grow lights are designed to emit light in a spectrum similar to the sun. The hps grow lights are ideal for greenhouse growth and increasing flowering in plants. Hps grow lights stands for high pressure sodium. This amazing invention, allows you to grow plants 365 days of the year.
Miracle of hps grow lights
For growing, flowering and blooming plants, as in hydroponics, HPS grow lights are used to increase the length of day, or to supplement natural sunshine in places where the sun is scarce.[ Hydroponics is growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, without the use of soil.] Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, mineral wool or coconut husk. Add to that hps grow lights, and you have a 100% indoor garden, without the need for soil or sunlight !
Add other lights to the hps grow lights
The HPS grow lights emit more light in the red and yellow regions of the spectrum, or natural sunshine, and can be used throughout the plant’s growth. These lights are best used together with metal halide grow lights, either in addition to, or cycled together. HPS bulbs also have a much longer life expectancy (20,000 hours) compared to metal halide lights. The HPS grow lights are usually used together with a reflector, to check and heighten the light emanations, and will include an electrical ballast, to contain the flow of electrical current to the light. This is needed because of the high intensity of the light that is necessary to produce something akin to sunlight.
One drawback to using these lights is the lack of blue spectrum light which dictates some form of supplemental lighting during other phases of plant growth where natural light is not available. To help facilitate the ‘endless summer’ effect, blue LED lights are used to enhance vegetative growth. Blue light can also be used in higher doses, as a supplement light to simulate the “Endless Summer” effect, as well as to stimulate growth and greening.
The only downside to using these lights is that they need large amounts of electricity to function properly. However, if there is an increase in demand for the use of these lights, because of the increasing market in organic farming, the prices will go down. More and more people are demanding hydroponically grown vegetables as opposed to those grown in soil, because of pollution and excessive use of toxic pesticides.
There are places in the world where there is little sun and soil to grow vegetables, especially during winter months, such that hps grow lights are a indeed lifesaver.
